Dermatix,for scar reduction.

For those unlucky individual who have the tendency to develop hypertrophied scar or keloid after a cut, it use to be a nightmare while seeking treatment from the plastic surgeon. The regular steroid injection would be something that you won't be looking forward to. Today i met up with Mr. Sri Naga Leong, the first person who got me Botox after returning to Malaysia.
He left Allergan several years ago and now working for Pharmalink. Since he has got cosmetic knowledge in his resume, so, he was placed in charged of the beauty products for Cosmetic Physicians, Dermatologist, and Plastic Surgeons.
He introduce a new range of cosmetic product which i will do a write up after getting familiariazed with it. More than that, he brought a new product for the keloid prone customers.
Ladies and gentleman, may i introduce to you, Dermatix. A clear gel to be applied on surgical scars when the skin are healing. It is used for the treatment and prevention od keloids and hyperthrophied scars , after the wound has healed and the skin surface is intact.
Each box contains a tube that carries 15g of gel.
Adviced to apply on a healing wound twice a day to create a more similar colour and contour between the old skin and the newly formed skin.
Just to enlighten fellow readers on stages of keloid.
A photographic evidence of the usefullness of the product.
Not even a scar or mark after removal of the mole!
A keloid that developed after a cystectomy was the revised by surgical removal of the keloid supplemented with Dermatix.
This write ups of this product appeared in September 2002, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
A true bonafide medically graded exclusively available at the nearest clinic.

  4. Is Dermatix is also effective for the treatment of chikenpox scars???coz just had my chikenpox just last month and the terrible marks on my face is really visible...i'm so sad.,my self esteem is very low now because of the marks...

  5. Dear Miss Anony,
Unfortunately, Dermatix isn't designed for scar healing post chicken pox. What you have is actually post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
You should use vitamin c serum, or even the range of products called Neostrata for whitening.
Do write to me at drwan76@yahoo.com for more information.

  8. Hi Dr Wan, i have acne scars on my face. Most of these acne were the vulgaris type and now they leave scarring on my face. Some of them are still red and some have turned into darker spots. Can dermatix lighten this kind of scar? How much is it sold in your clinic? You mentioned about post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be treated with vitamin C serum. How can i tell if the scar is actually the later type? Thanks for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Dear Ceci,
Are you still having acne problem at the moment? The rational method to attend to your problem is to reduce the incidence of acne, and only then can we attend to your scarring problem.
A combination of Neostrata product, chemical peeling once per month, and vitamin c serum would definitely solve your problem.
You scars are post inflammatory, hence during inflammation, more pigmented cells(melanin) gets deposited onto the affected site. There is yet to exist one single magical potion or cream that does it all. But given a choice, vitamin c serum does the best among so many. But remember what I've just said, the best way to approach your problem is through a regime of products, not only with vitamin c.

  10. Dear Dr Wan,
Yes i still have acne problems. Thanks for the recommendation. I went to a skin doctor before, and was recommended Neostrata products, I bought the facial cleanser, oil control gel, oil free moisturizer with spf and the citrate treatment system kit. The oil control gel and citrate treatment system worked well. The cleanser was just ok. My skin was sensitive to the moisturizer as it made my skin itchy. I switched to murad later which turned my skin into a disaster. My skin turned red and i got more acne before i started using murad. I stopped using barely two weeks later and turned to organic skincare for a gentler formula. I have been using organic skincare for 3 weeks now and still use murad acne gel and sulphur cream on on my affected area a few times a week, worrying using it everyday would be too harsh for my skin. My biggest concern now is how to make them go away with products that are not irritating for skin yet effective enough to treat my acne. Please advice me on what you think about this and if incorporating the neostrata chemical peel (any recommendation?)into my regime would be helpful. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Dear respected MIss Ceci,
Sounds like you reacted well toward the PHA element of Neostrata cleanser and oil control gel. Since your have acne, why were you prescribed moisturizer? Murad being a commercial rather than a medical product doesn't isn't scent or colour free like Neostrata.
At the moment, use only the cleanser and the oil control gel. The reason your skin is inflamed could probably due to reaction to Murad's regime. Let your skin heal first and the cleanser itself has anti inflammatory properties. Please do keep in touch.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanks doctor for you reply. I have actually finished using my neostrata kit, but would like to get 1 or 2 products to incorporate into my regime. How much is the neostrata oil control gel and citrate treatment sold in your clinic? Any other chemical peeling treatment for sensitive skin that you could recommend?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dear respected Miss Ceci,
The Neostrata Oil control gel is RM90, unfortunately I don't have the citrate treatment regime. I am surprised it's still available as I was told by the drug rep that it's already out of production for quite a while now since it's a slow moving product. I would assume your citrate home treatment regime is a self chemical peeling mixture that contains only 5% of glycolic acid. It would be better if the doctor were to evaluate you, and once your skin's inflammation stops, you can proceed with chemical peeling by the physician starting with 25%.

  14. Dear Dr Wang
Both my children had recently had chicken pox. My daughter (nearly five yrs old) had developed really large blisters, one of which was around the tip of her nose. This scabbed over nicely, but the scab was accidentally knocked off too early and it had left a large crater behind:-((. I've been spending most of my free time on the internet looking for miracle creams and other lotions and potions to use on this healing wound. So far I've come across the usual suspects of Dermatix, Contractubex, Mederma, Cicaplast, etc... which one of these, if any, would you recommend to use on her nose during (or after) the healing process?? I know these creams are not being marketed to help chicken pox wounds, but from time to time I come across people who say that one or the other had really helped them – how can this be?!?. What options do we have to restore her beautiful little nose?
With regards and many thanks, bernie

    ReplyDelete
  15. Dear respected Miss Anony,
Unfortunately, there isn't anything in the market available to "correct" the temporary defect due to immature scab removal. However, I think a lot of misunderstanding concerning these scar reducing gel. All the mentioned brands does not promise permanent or 100% of improvement of scar. Besides, these are gels which are designed to reduce hypertrophied scars.
Fortunately, our body is designed in such a way that whichever that bleeds easily, heals faster.
While the tip of the nose is mostly cartilaginous, the wound that you see is skin deep. Hence structurally, it wouldn't cause permanent defect. The "crater" will heal in time. One good option is to start applying vitamin E cream which would improve the appearance of the scar.

  16. Dear Dr Wang,

I have meet an accident on April 09 and have severe scar on my body.(injury+surgery scar).

Currently i'm only using Vit E for the scar but it somehow show slow effect. And i'm been searching for a better scar remover cream/oil.

Just want to ask your opinion, is Mederma/ Dermetix will work faster than Vit E? To make the scar less visible, which product should i use or should i jus continue wit the Vit E?

I've also bought a rose hip oil but it dint show effect as well.

Dermatix would help reduce the different tone of colour as well as softens the hypertrophied scar. It does help. You can get it over the counter in almost every pharmacy.

I Intan. In 2004 I had an accident. My neck got scar. I try Bio Oil but it seem not working. I also try mederma..same result with bio oil. Now I didnt use any product for treat my scar. I been go to the doctor for treatment before using bio oil and mederma..the doctor said my scar is keloids scar. The doctor inject me with shincot if Im not wrong. still doesnt work. Now I dont have confident. Bcoz of the scar. It dermatix can help me?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hello Intan,
While Shincort injection doesn't resolve your hypertrophied scar( Keloid) repeated, not to mention severely painful injections are needed to temporarily shrink the size. I would recommend Kelocote, which is a gel like topical. While silicone gels are usually and more efficiently applied during scar healing, it helps too in already formed scar. No harm trying, right?
Kelocote is available in most plastic surgeon's clinic, and in some cosmetic clinic.
I have the samples, but I do not stock them.

2 years ago i had an allergic when i took panadol as my medicine. i met a doctor, and he said i got allergic. and the allergic brought up scars on my lips area. it is like a circle around my lips (black circle). would u imagine that? really, i'm not confident with this scar, everybody keeps looking at my mouth when they talked to me. i already took a lot of scar reduction products, such as bio oil and a lot of cosmetics brand, but it doesnt work. please advise me if i can use dermatix to solve my problem.

    thank you very much.

  33. HI MIss Nabila,
You must be rare case where a person gets allergies towards Panadol. Are you so sure the doctor is right, because rare diagnosis is rarely correct.
anyway, Dermatix will not help. I can't imagine the black circle unless if you have a close up photo taken on good natural light without flash. that would help a lot. Thanks

  39. I have applied the Dermatix (ultra) on my scar (2 weeks old) and I notice there is a layer of silicon formed on the 'gap'of the scar and it covered quite nicely the scar. When I practice application twice/day, I noticed the silicon layer got accumulated and getting thicker and thicker, will this be okay? Or i need to rub off the "old" layer of silicon everytime before i apply a new layer?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dear Miss Amy,
Scar management is the toughest if not the trickiest part in any Aesthetician's practice.
Hence, prevention of scar is of utmost importance to us.
Dermatix may soften the scar while you may need additional vitamin c serum and vitamin A in the form of retinol A to brighten up the colour to equalize it with the surrounding skin texture and colour.
But how bad is your scar to begin with?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Doc,

I'm 25/Male/M'sia. Started to have pimples since 14 (1999) but nothing serious till I reach 17 until 20 yrs old (2002-2005), pretty serious acne vulgaris. Pus type.
ISOTREX saved me. Burns and dry like hell but it WORKS. 2006 onwards till 2008, still get pimples once in a while, various factors, but sill sick of it until I discovered ADAPALENE (From Galderma).
Much better compared to ISOTREX, No burning, a bit dry, works much FASTER. Present day now, dont really get pimples except when continuous lack of sleep.
Now scar treatment. I have a mixed of "box cars" scars, a little "ice picks" type and slights bumpy irregular scars. Depressed type when looked carefully.
Tried MEDERMA, itch like mad. Only after 1 day I have to stop. Just bought DERMATIX.
Need your opinion of it Doc. Or should I send you the pictures of my scars for your thorough evaluation?

Im,Zack from KL.Just want to ask u.Do Dermatix can be used to remove moles
and I also have a scar on the forehead near the eyes, can be used to remove scars Dermatix in these parts?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dear Zack,
Unfortunately, Dermatix isn't designed for removal for mole. It's not designed for removal of scar as well.
Scar management is a whole different set of managemet altogether in Aesthethics and often time it poses a challenge to any Aestheticians.
Dermatixs may soften the soften hyperthrophied scar, while Vitamin C serum and Vitamin A in the form of retinol A is necessarry to lighten the colour of the scar to blend in with the surrounding skin colour.

  49. hello doc.
i have a lot of scars since i have sensitive skin especially on my leg. i used to shave my legs and it left me with black dot marks after scratching due to itchiness.i also got eczema scars behind my knee.is dermatix is the right product for me or is there any recommendation on how to make my dark scars fade away?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi,
Your's is a typical case of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which unfortunately is rather tricky and difficult to manage. However all hope isn't lost as anything that works on the face should theoretically work on the skin on any part of your body.
You may need to see a dermatologist as only they and aestheticians keep this cream by the name of hydroquinone. I encourage you to do some read up about hydro quinine by simply search information about it from Wikipedia.
There are several precautions that you need to take while applying hydroquinone.
    1. Apply only at the pigmented area very sparingly
    2. Use it only at night to avoid exposure to sunlight when applied
    3. Never use it for more than 6 weeks
Try that first then you can write to me at drwan76@yahoo.com for further advice

  52. hello,,,i'm Ctiz from Pahang. i also have scar on my face. the scar is an old scar. scar has make me lost confident when in public.could dermatic help me?or should i use dermatic with other product?thanks for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dear Anony,
Old scar is best treated with ultra advanced scar treatment. Silicone gel is used while the wound is still fresh is healing to minimize scarring.

    Dear respected Ctiz,
I understand your situation completely. Trust me. Believe it or not, even I had acne vulgaris while I was in form 4, and it really damaged my self esteemed. It was only that I excel in my academic and sports that helps to compensate for it.
While dermatix helps to soften the wound/scar, it does help if you add vitamin C serum and vitamin A in the form of retinol A(not retin A as sold in the pharmacy) to lighten the darker pigment of the wound.
Otherwise, to speed up the pigmentation treatment, you would need to use a chemical called hydroquinone. Please do some reading on it from Wikipedia.
You can only attain hydroquinone from dermatologist or Aesthetic Doctor. The are couple of things that you MUST REMEMBER when using hydroquinone.
    1. Only use it at night
    2. Apply sparingly(very thin layer only at the effected area.
    3. Use only at night
    4. Never use it continuously for more than 6 weeks as it predisposes to skin cancer.(according to some medical studies.)

  62. Hi Dr Wan,

6 months ago, my leg was bitten by an ant at the garden. It was a small bite. I started scratching the surrounding as it was very itchy. Few months later, the surrounding became inflamed with yellow discharge - so the small bite became as huge as '50 cents' coin! I consulted a dermatologist a month ago. He diagnosed it as skin allergy & prescribed some medication so now the part is no longer producing yellow discharge. However, the red scar is still apparent, making it difficult for me to wear skirt at workplace. Is Dermatix a good solution?

It is indeed more difficult to manage scars that is more than 2 years old. There are several products out there that actually reduces the size and the difference in colour tone. To hard trying at this point right. Dermatix Ultra is now available in the market today. So, no promises, but you can purchase and try it out. Whatever it is, NEVER gO FOR LASER TREATMENT.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Dear Dr. Wan,

In February, I had a red inflammation on my nose and used a hot compress to try and reduce it. I then put dettol on it overnight and that was a very bad idea. The circular area where the inflammation had been scabbed and I washed off the remnants in the shower so I may have removed some parts of the scab slightly prematurely.

Now it is September and I cannot go out into the sun without getting post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. When I look in the mirror in the shade it is obvious to see where the area of the inflammation was. In the sun things don't look so bad.

The skin is healing, but it is a slow process and is very slightly raised. However, it is not the same texture as the normal skin on the other side of my nose and is still sensitive. In fact I think the very thin top layer of skin was removed by the overly hot compressing on the right side of my nose, so it really was a burn that was not properly managed.

I made a mistake in after care by putting lemon juice on it so the skin is whiter than my normal colour, but the lemon juice may have burnt things or made them worse. I also tried the following; honey, aloe vera and bepanthen.

Sometimes the area where the scab was itches or hurts.

I was thinking that dermatix would help to reduce any inflammation and aid in healing the skin.

I am also hoping the nose can go back to its natural colour. I don't really like any cremes as my skin can't breathe when I put them on and I need to find a sunblock that doesn't block the pores.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Many Thanks,

    John

    ReplyDelete
  74. Dear respected John,
Boy, you really abused your nose. First of all, you don't apply Dettol, or any colloured disinfectant as it gives your a tattooing effect. I would guess the best thing to do right now is to see an aesthetician of a dermatologist so as they can prescribe you a cream called Hydroquinone to even out the colour of your skin. However you would need to follow strict protocol while using the cream as it carries risk of developing skin cancer according to some European studies. There has been no such cases in Malaysia, but wewould need to follow the strict protocol given.
    Visit the nearest skin specialist.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Dear respected Mr,
First of all, do not be so worried as there is solution to every problem. The problem against a slow healing is that the scar has been left for more than 2 years, hence managing the scar would be a little more difficult. Dermatix ultra can be obtained from pharmacy. It helps to soften the keloid and then i would receommend vitamin C serum to apply over it to even out the colour. If the scar is too big, I am afriad you may need to visit the plastic surgeon and sees what he has got to say. That's all that I can advice you from mail. I pray and wish you the best.

  77. Hi Dr Wan

I am wondering whether I can have your advice on Dermatix, Mederma and NeoStrata NeoCeuticals Skin Brightening Gel.

I have bought these products as I am in a terrible nightmare since I had the chickenpox 5 weeks ago. That took me 3 weeks to recover from the fever and healing since my age is quite old now (34++ years old). Unfortunately, there are a few large craters left on my face(on the nose on around mouth area) and my body.

I have bought the Dermatix, Mederma and NeoStrata NeoCeuticals Skin Brightening Gel to reduce the scars on my face and body. Basically, I apply Dermatix on my face, Mederma on my hands and legs, and NeoStrata NeoCeuticals Skin Brightening Gel on my body just to see the effects of these products to the scars.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any significant improvement at this stage, on either scars of my face or body after 2 weeks of using this products.

Can I have your kind advice on this matter? what should I do to run away from the nightmare?

I have read through your advice on this website, you have recommended people to use vitamin C serum to even out the skin tone colour, do you have any recommend for any brand for this serum that I can purchase from any pharmacy?

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

  78. Hi Dr. Wan,

  79. Dear Anonymous,
I am sorry to inform you that any scar beyond 2 years old is difficult to remove. If you have had a revision of scar, probably the visibility is due to pigmentation. As a scar forms, it's collagen contain increases, hence the difference in term of consistency between the normal skin and scar. Dermatix is primarily for hypertropic scar. If it's due to pigmentation, I would suggest a consultation from a dermatologist as they have this cream called hydroquinone which is a whitening agent that may help you. But then again, I don't have a photo of your scar. Hence I would just assume you have done a revision of scar, and hence what is left over is probably the hyperpigmentation. A combination of hydroquinone, vitamin C serum, and retinol A would help to a certain degree.I hope this would help you.
Thanks for writing in. You are always welcome to email me at drwan76@yahoo.com.

  80. hi Dr.Wan,i am Eugene, from PhiLippines it has been 3 weeks from now and the dark spots are still visible in my face and some parts on my back and on my chest, this was because of chicken pox.my question is can DERMATIX remove the scars and the dark spot on my face and on some of my body parts.i really need ur medical attention about this.thank you.

  81. Dear respected Eugene,
Your scar is still healing. It's the best time to apply DERMATIX PLUS!
Remember, NOT DERMATIX BUT "DERMATIX PLUS" as it will reduce the hyperpigmentation as well. Use a good sunblock, preferable with high SPF. The only medically graded sunblock is Heliocare. Its a Spanish product, but I am sure dermatologist carries this product.
Don't scratch the scar though I am sure its itchy at this moment as it may cause prolong inflammation. The longer the inflammation is, the chances of developing hyperpigmentation would be much higher. Thank you for writing in.

    Yours sincerely

  85. HALLO DR WAN...I GOT ACNE SCAR PROBLEM..CAN DERMATIX TREAT IT..AND HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO CURE...

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dear anonymous,
Try Erase scar gel. It's supposed to be better than Dermatix. Dermatix doesn't cure acne scar, but Erase does. Not only does it remove the scar, it actually even out the discolouration of the scar. It's available in the pharmacy.

  87. hi! is dermatix effective in depressed/ crater like scars? got it after mole removal. thanks :)

  88. Hi Doctor . I'm Lily . Exactly one year ago I had a huge accident on my thigh which was so deep you could see the white tissue. The doctor just cleaned the wound with no stitching . Now the wound has closed but the scar is horrible .
The scar is brownish purple and about 2x3 inch in size. It is not elevated but when I press the area it does hurt .
What can I do to treat this?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Dear respected Miss Lily,
Sounds like your doctor treated you with a method called "healing with secondary intention" as the wound wasn't clean enough to be stitched. Hence he allows the wound to heal by its own. The problem is, during wound healing, chronic inflammation may cause discolouration, hypertrophy and malformed scar. I would recommend a new product called Erase which is available in the local pharmacy. It's for scar. It evens out the discolouration caused by the scar as well. Try that.

  90. Thanks. But I've tried looking for the brand , Erase. I can't seem to find it any pharmacy?

  93. Hi Doctor. I'm Michael. I've been trying to get rid of my keloid scars on my nose caused by acnes. Lately, I've have been visiting a derm clinic to get a cortisone shot to help layer off my keloid scars(i think i got 4 shots as of now in a once-a-month interval). As of the time being, my keloid scars have improved a bit; but not completely flattened out(the raised scars are still there especially using different lighting angles and are light pink). WOuld dermatrix help diminish my keloid scars because im planning to get another cortisone shot in conjuntion with using Dermatrix. Is this okay? Thank you in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Dear Micheal,
I don't think steroid injection with Hydrocortisone is a good idea. Normally Triamcinolone is used instead. Another disadvantage is that only you would know how painful the injection can be. Once you stop your injection, the scar will grow back. There is an alternative to Dermatix called Erase. It's available in the local pharmacy.

  95. Hi DOC!
So you mean I can use Erase Scar Remover to help diminish my keloid scars?THanks!

  96. Yes,
And it's much more effective compared to Dermatix.

  97. HI DOC..IS THAT LASER CAN SOLVE MY ACNE SCAR ON MY FACE..OR THEY STILL HAVE ANOTHER SOLUTION..THANKS..

  98. Dear doctor,
about 3 years, I cut myself while lifting my foot hard and it hit a rusty table but I didnt get stitches as it was too late since I ran 5km later with the injury. It looks to me that the scar is a Hypertrophic scar. Would it be better to get dermatix or kelo-cote? Or both? Thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Dear Dr,

I just done my double eyelid surgery on 24 Dec, which scar gel is better for me? Dermatix Ultra or Kelocote? because it look like a hypertrophic on my eyelid..

    ReplyDelete
  100. Dear Yumi,
Either one will do the trick. But for hypertrophied scar that is beyond two 2 years old, it's rather difficult to get rid of them. But no harm trying. At least it will reduce it's size

    ReplyDelete
  101. Dear Dr,

When can I start using Dermatix ultra after plastic surgery?

    ReplyDelete
  102. That would be the best time to use it.

    ReplyDelete
  103. The best time to use it direct after surgery?
I try to search few pharmacy, but i cannot get the dermatix ultra in Penang. Where can i get this scar gel?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Perhaps the surgeon who did the surgery would have such gel. The hospital definitely have them

    ReplyDelete
  105. For my eyelid scar, can I use the Dermatix instead of Dermatix Ultra? or any recommend for scar gel?

    thanks
